Glass thickness is the spec most heavily marketed and least well explained. "9mm thick!" appears on product pages constantly, usually with no indication of what that buys you or whether you need it.

What the number measures
Thickness refers to the wall thickness of the tubing: the distance from the outside surface to the inside. It's set at the raw tubing stage, before anything is shaped, and it's the single biggest driver of a piece's weight and cost.
A crucial caveat that most listings gloss over: thickness is rarely uniform across a piece. The tube might be 9mm while the base, neck and joint are thinner or thicker depending on how the glass was worked. When a piece is described as "9mm," that almost always refers to the main tube.
This matters because the joint, usually the thinnest structural point, is where most bongs actually break.
5mm
The industry baseline for quality glass. Genuinely durable if handled with normal care.
- Weight: Light. Easy to lift one-handed, easy to move around.
- Durability: Survives normal use indefinitely. Will not survive a drop onto tile.
- Heat: Heats and cools quickly, so it's the most vulnerable to thermal shock. Never pour boiling water into a cold 5mm piece.
- Cost: Lowest.
5mm is not "cheap glass." It's the standard, and a well-made 5mm borosilicate beaker will last years. What it won't do is forgive accidents.
Right for: Careful users, first pieces, anything that stays on a shelf.
7mm
The daily-driver sweet spot, and what we'd recommend to most people.
- Weight: Noticeably heavier. This is a feature: the added mass lowers the centre of gravity and makes the piece much harder to knock over. Most breakage isn't dropping, it's tipping.
- Durability: Survives the realistic accidents. Bumped off a table edge, caught by a sleeve, set down too hard.
- Heat: More thermal mass, so more tolerance for temperature swings.
- Cost: Moderate step up from 5mm.
The jump from 5mm to 7mm is the biggest real-world durability gain in the range. If you're picking one thickness without thinking further, pick this.

9mm
Genuinely heavy-duty, and genuinely heavy.
- Weight: Substantial. A 9mm 18-inch beaker is a two-hand piece. Some people love this; some find it unwieldy.
- Durability: Survives things that destroy thinner glass. Not indestructible: dropped on concrete, it still breaks.
- Heat: Highest thermal mass. Most forgiving of hot water, slowest to shock.
- Cost: Highest. More raw glass, longer working time, more skill to shape evenly.
Right for: Heavy-handed users, households with pets or kids, anyone who's broken more than one piece.
The honest limits of thickness
Three things thicker glass does not do:
It doesn't make hits smoother. Smoothness comes from water volume, percolation and cooling distance. Thickness has no effect on the smoke path. A 5mm honeycomb piece hits smoother than a 9mm plain tube, every time.
It doesn't make a piece unbreakable. Thickness helps with knocks and tips. It does not save a piece from a fall onto a hard floor. Physics wins.
It doesn't fix a weak joint. A 9mm tube with a poorly-finished joint will break at the joint. Wall thickness and joint quality are separate things, and joint quality is the one that determines lifespan. That's a manufacturing variable, not a spec you can read off a page, which is exactly why it's rarely advertised.
Why borosilicate is the part that actually matters
Thickness is secondary to material. Borosilicate contains boron oxide, which gives it a very low coefficient of thermal expansion: it barely changes size with temperature. That's why it survives hot water on cold glass, and why laboratories use it.
Soft glass (soda-lime) expands and contracts far more. It'll crack from a temperature change that borosilicate shrugs off, regardless of how thick it is. A 9mm soft glass piece is more fragile in real use than a 5mm borosilicate one.

How thickness is actually achieved
Wall thickness starts with the tubing. Thicker tubing takes longer to bring to working temperature, holds heat longer, and moves more slowly under the torch. Shaping 9mm evenly takes materially more time and skill than 5mm.
That's the real reason thick glass costs more. Not the raw material, but the labour and the failure rate. Thick tubing punishes mistakes: uneven heating leaves internal stress that cracks the piece weeks later, sometimes with no impact at all.
Which is why who made it matters as much as the number. Properly annealed 7mm outlasts badly-worked 9mm.
