The downstem is the part of your bong that most people overlook, but it plays a bigger role in how your bong hits than almost any other component. The downstem connects your bowl to the water chamber and determines how smoke enters the water. A basic non-diffused downstem pushes smoke through a single opening, creating large bubbles that cool smoke minimally. A quality diffused downstem breaks that same smoke into dozens or hundreds of smaller bubbles through slits or holes along the base, dramatically increasing the surface area that contacts the water and producing a noticeably smoother, cooler hit.
